It’s clear that during the holiday shopping season consumer spending hit its peak. We are used to hearing the buzz around Black Friday and Cyber Monday… but have you stopped to wonder what everyone is really buying during this holiday madness?

Thanks to the internet, we have access to almost everything and anything in an instant. A recent Pew Study highlights an increase in online shopping and reveals that 79% of Americans shop online today – a huge increase from the 22% reported in 2000. Thankfully, brands such as Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Zappos and many more have made shopping online magical with just a click of a button.

This past holiday season Earny saw a 37% increase in online shopping, accompanied by a wide range of purchases.

Looking at shopping behavior across a country as large and geographically diverse as the U.S. will give you quite the story. And so that’s what we did! In a recent analysis of more than 100 million purchases between November 1st, 2017 and February 1st, 2018, we identified the top selling items in every state and found some fascinating results. Although some of these best sellers make sense for each state’s population, others are more unexpected. Let’s take a look across the map…

In California, following the iPhone X release on Nov 3rd, the iPhone X screen protector was the top selling item for the state. We were not surprised, as this pricey item requires all the protection it can get!

While California was busy protecting its gadgets, Washington D.C. shoppers were out buying “Obama: An Intimate Portrait” book.

The chill was in the air for the rest of America as Vermont goers were buying ice scrapers, Louisiana residents were stocking-up on flu symptom pellets, and Pennsylvania citizens were storm proofing their cars.

We had some fun surprises show up too… As New Mexico residents were out buying hair extensions, residents of Nevada were on the BitCoin bandwagon buying cryptocurrency wallets, and South Carolina shoppers were out stocking up on TP.

All 100 million purchases used for our holiday state insights were protected through Earny’s app, giving holiday shoppers the best gift of the season – refunds. Earny allows you to shop with confidence. It leverages price protection, a benefit that is often overlooked by almost 90% of Americans. Price protection is provided by retailers and credit card issuers and allows you to be refunded on items when prices drop on your previous purchases.

Regardless of the state you live in, make sure you’re using Earny to never overpay on your purchase. .
